What a lovely title, what a lovely composition, what a lovely voice. I think I was inspired in the first line. The guitar tone is effortlessly playing with Anna Roenigk’s (Born Again Virgin) voice. This track is coming from a self-titled debut EP produced by Brian Beattie. That name is notable, and quite excellent considering the work he has done with Daniel Johnston and Okkervil River.
I was caught off guard thinking this was another mellow gift offered by a swooning Austin, and now London songstress. It is, however, it’s so much more. The balance in the production, moving in and out of chaos throughout the track is anything short of brilliant. Spider in the Snow is a powerful track that pulls influence from 90s grunge and delivers in such a powerfully dynamic way.
Oddly enough, there is a style in Anna’s vocal that is really reminiscent of another Austin contemporary, Andy Baxter, of Penny and Sparrow. It’s the long note held on the last word in the chorus section. I find the tonality and pace throughout her cadence is quite charming.
This release featured on the upcoming EP by Born Again Virgin, is released on My Little Empire Records.
