The biting social commentary and darkly catchy post-punk of Stand Up and Say No is born from something of a personal perspective as Andre Nault, the band’s primary singer-songwriter, writes observationally about current events. Heed the unapologetically insightful, and viscerally dynamic single “Daily Reminders.”
The band mines moody indie rock and explosive choruses for an intriguing melding of atmosphere and anthemics. Stand Up and Say No has garnered favorable comparisons to Interpol, The Strokes, and The Killers, among others.
At the center of it all is singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Andre Nault. Stand Up and Say No came together after a month-long fevered burst of creativity. “The name is a way of saying, ‘I’m doing the best I can—I’m winging it,’” Andre says with a self-deprecating chuckle. His statement is a playful contrast to the sleekly aggressive and dynamically expansive indie rock Stand Up and Say No plies.
The single “Daily Reminders” is an intriguing entry in Stand Up and Say No’s catalog. It’s built around a hypnotically loping bassline that’s delicately coated with textures from vintage synths. The song relies impactfully on loud/soft dynamics, building tension and releasing it with dramatic grandeur. For this song, Andre turns his keen lens to political corruption of the Trump presidency. “This is a song from a Canadian who can’t even vote in the US,” he says with a good-natured laugh. “My main point is saying that people are more important than dogma.“
