This album begins to redefine the alternative indie pop sound of the bands earlier work.  Hints of the folk-pop stylings of Mumford & Sons or Lumineers in the track “The Gold,” takes the once static sound to cross new genres and mend fences that have been displaced by other more distinguished artists.

“Lead,SD” a fantastical alt-rock adventure depicting the life of another in Lead, South Dakota. This track drives forward with power guitar and layered instrumentation that sells the whimsical vocals of Andy Hull.  With the loss of the talented instrumentalist, Chris Freeman, the band has moved on and seems to have embraced the change.  Perhaps finding the simplicity, and a more holistic structure to the group as a four-piece.

“The Alien,” comes eerily close to a more rootsy, folk version of a Radiohead tune. I am constantly encouraged by the songwriting talent while listening to this album repeatedly.

“The Wolf” is maybe the strongest resemblance to previous offerings, however, it is unique and cinematic in its approach.  To get the nuances and subtleties I suggest prolonged listening with headphones to truly capture the layers to these tunes.
