The fifth studio album by these Oxford rockers doesn’t disappoint. I have only recently gotten on the bandwagon for this band, and not being a lifelong enthusiast I suppose I don’t have the history or any angst on this new creative direction. I can’t understand why so many fans of any particular band have an issue with growth or change of direction. People mature, sound evolves and Foals haven’t even done anything all that drastic. I would say it’s more mature, it’s more synth heavy and cinematic. All good things in my eyes. Believe me, the raw earthy tones of the former albums are somewhat lost; replaced with waves of synth and catchy melodic grooves.
They have nailed the first single Exits with catchy vocal hooks and simple keys, this is a fun track that will get you tapping your toes. I love the driving energy throughout the next few tracks; White Onions is rocking and the fat bass riff in In Degrees is so divine. Vocally this is a strong album, both lyrically, and in the delivery.
With the promise of a new album by the end of the year, I am looking forward to seeing how they wrap up this package. I must admit that I have never been more excited to experience their live show. Already known as one of the most energetic live performances, I can only begin to imagine how intense this will become.
